You've retired from the military and want to make a career as a civilian. You want to make enough money to live comfortably even if you already receive benefits or other income due to your veteran status.
You can go to college and get a technical degree or certificate, which doesn't require a massive amount of schooling but still allows you to learn the skills you need to get a great career. Here are things you can do as a veteran to prepare to go to college.
Learn what you are already skilled in
You likely learned some valuable skills while you were in the military. These skills can be used to help improve your chances of getting a great job in the civilian sector when you select a college course that revolves around what you have some knowledge of. For example, if you are skilled at electrical work or technology, choose a technical or certificate program that revolves around these life-experience trainings.
If you worked in the medical sector while in the military, consider enrolling in a nursing or medical assistant program. The more you branch out on the skills you've learned why in active duty, the greater your college experience can be.
Apply for veteran benefits
You can get a certificate for veteran benefits services to help make college more affordable for you. There are also loan programs, grants, and other special discounts that may apply to you as a reward for your military service. You can find the financial assistance you need by researching what's available to you online.
If you aren't sure what type of career you want to get into or what college you should go to, talk to a career or college counselor.
